Have you guys seen the movie Coco? I watched it recently and loved it. It is such a sweet movie, and it actually enlightened me on Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, which is celebrated in Mexico as well as many other Latin American countries. Growing up in Texas, I was aware of the holiday, but besides skeletons and colorful flowers, I really didn’t fully understand what it was all about. To be honest, I’m not a big lover of skeletons or skulls, and I always thought of it as sort of a Latin American version of Halloween (which it is not). The movie helped me understand that it was much different than that and spurred me to do a little more research, and now I know that it’s not a scary holiday, but instead a meaningful and family-oriented respectful celebration of life and ancestors. I hope to share more about the holiday in future posts.
Of course, if you know me, you know that dressing up for holidays and themes is one of my favorite things, and I couldn’t help but incorporate it into one of my Microfashion Around the World posts, so here we go, Mexico! I’ve always adored the bright colors and embroidery of traditional Mexican attire – when I was very young, probably only 6 or 7, my parents brought me back a bright turquoise dress with colorful embroidery from Mexico and I was completely obsessed with it. I vividly remember growing out of it (so sad!) and finding out shortly thereafter that my mom gave it away, and I was so upset! Even then, I wanted my old clothes for keepsakes, haha! Yes, the traditional Mexican style just resonates with me. I included some traditional-ish Mexican outfits in the collage below, along with some skeleton-themed items because how can I not?! They are fun for Halloween and a lot more meaningful when you know more about the holiday.
- White Embroidered Mexican Dress
- Marigold Flower Crown
- Skeleton Gloves
- Brown Serape Baby Romper
- Black and Silver Charro Suit
- Mexican Leather Huaraches
- Sugar Skull Mask
- Purple Striped Mexican Outfit
- Skeleton One-Piece
I also love this serape fiesta dress, this embroidered boys outfit, and these cute clutches which might be more for mama than the babies! Happy Halloween and Happy Day of the Dead!
P.S. My favorite British-themed clothes, and some last-minute DIY costume ideas for Halloween!
