I love an excuse for a good party (especially one with a theme!), even if it’s just a small group. This weekend, I put together a little Swedish-style Midsummer dinner, and it turned out to be such a fun theme for a summer party. You can learn more about Midsummer in Sweden in this post.
Here’s what I served at our dinner:
- Beer as per tradition, but also rosé, because it seemed wrong to have a summer party without it!
- A charcuterie board with meats, cheeses, smoked salmon, pickled herring, berries, and pickles
- Our favorite meatballs in the crockpot
- Dill potato salad
- Roasted asparagus
- And of course, a strawberry cake! (Our cake had lemon too – you can find the recipe here. It turned out wonderfully.)
It honestly took me 24 hours to throw together, just because charcuterie and roasted asparagus take hardly any prep work, the meatballs are super simple to just throw in the crockpot, and the potato salad was not complicated or time-consuming. Even the cake was simple – I love how straightforward the recipe was, and how it makes a statement with a spread like this. I baked the layers the night before and made the frosting and assembled it on the day off the party. Can I use this same menu for every dinner party?!
I planned on having the dinner out by the fire table, but it ended up raining. Luckily we were still able to enjoy nature under the covered porch. I had decorated with some greenery and candles, and we watched the rain, sipped on our wine, and grazed on food all evening. Completely lovely! Our dinner was adults only, but for kiddos, you could set up a flower crown-making station and a maypole and you’d be set. And don’t forget to teach them the frog dance – it’s quite hilarious to watch!
Have you ever hosted or been to a Midsummer celebration? We’d love to hear your experiences or ideas in the comments!
P.S. Cute kids outfits for Midsummer, plus a video on how the Swedish celebrate it! And last but not least, some tools and resources for summer cooking that might come in handy.
